unit ID found in your confirmation email

I have looked email by email for the unit ID found in your confirmation email that is required for the setup. I did not receive it.

I also looked in the order history and entire back office. Not there either.

Please advise me on how and/or where to get this "unit ID" so that I can complete the setup process.

I think it is on the bottom of the unit

No that is the serial number. The unit ID is the one above that one :)

Take a look at this page:

That is the example link given in the confirmation email (That I did not receive).

The "41c189de-83e1-47a2-9a6d-a1d61929b01" part (that is the example number and format) is what the top open blank is looking for. I don't have it and I'm unable to proceed with setup.

Anyone else not receive the confirmation email
Or have a way to get said confirmation?

Hi trstone,

Missing 'unit ID' seems to be a permanent issue for some new users. I had exactly the same. I ended up sending e-mail to OPI support (support@openproducts.com) and five hours later I had the 'unit ID' mailed back to me. Note this was week-day, so they responded quite speedy.

Being an 'open-source guy' I tried to provide all relevant/supporting material for OPI support team to avoid such activation problems in the future. My original mail from OPI (the one received at time of purchase) was sent to support with suggestion that 'unit ID' was NOT MENTIONED anywhere. But it should, according to OPI team and other guides. Unfortunately no joy. OPI support ignored all facts, they just responded with standard "The link was included in the order confirmation email from our webshop." No, it WAS NOT.

So get ready for quite bumpy road with your new OPI device :-) Get used to the fact that you cannot log into it (no console and no 'root' access - read ver.1.0 release notes), that you cannot even check what sw version your device runs (read some other threads on forum).
Just sit back and manually check your OPI, because you won't be notified on new sw versions and upgrades :-)

Let me start by saying that we are painfully aware that the activation-link has not been sent out properly. My apologies for this, and for the somewhat short answer on these support issues. Dars, we do appreciate all details on this matter.

Trstone and others, missing the link? Contact support@openproducts.com and we will help you out asap.

The big problem here is that we sent out a lot of these emails before we realized that there was a problem. (Our testing obviously have missed this so there has to be a difference in how things worked out when we started with the real shipments and when we tested internally.) This is something we of course have to investigate further and make sure is working.

Regarding the bumpy ride. There will most likely be more problems along the way since this is version 1.0 of a completely new product. I though really hope that we will get by without any major errors.

On the roadmap there is shell access already in the current sprint, thus you should be able to log in to OPI via ssh shortly. (If you really need shell access today it is possible to do so via the installer.)

We are also working on a new starting page when logged in. This will include among other things current OPI version which we of course realize is an important piece of information.

Let me end this somewhat lengthy reply by saying that you early adopters of OPI is a wonderful audience and i really appreciate your patience and support. Never hesitate getting back to us with feedback or questions.

Thank you for the informative reply. They seem to know about this issue now. Probably thanks to you and others. I didn't have to argue about not receiving the activation link. They were kind enough to just send it and apologize for it. Although the link didn't work :) (I ended up using another option which I describe below). I will be keeping a watch for the issues you listed. I'm sure they have their hands full. Hopefully they will get it together in later versions. This is kind of like a beta so I expected a bumpy road. Hang in there. I think they are on a nobel path. This service and device is a milestone in the personal cloud and personal security industry. I think it's worth it. Thanks again for your reply and warnings.

Thank you for the reply. As a former business owner, I can imagine the hours you guys are putting in. So, no worries. I'm sure posts like this will help others with similar issues. Keep up the good work and thank you for developing this product! You have my support and admiration.


Below is what happened when I clicked the unitid / activation link from the email:

The link took me to the setup page. After entering my OPI device's serial number (off the back of the OPI device) and clicking "Start Setup". The page changed from picture 1 ( http://postimg.org/image/53skhggu1/ ) to picture 2 ( http://postimg.org/image/81fkl6cbr/ ). So, I entered both the unit ID and the serial number and clicked "Start Setup". I got cycled back to picture 1. Then again to picture 1. {It would be nice to be able to post such images directly to the forum :) }

So, I attempted to use https://opi instead. I took the info after unitid= in the url ( https://setup.op-i.me/?unit_id=XXXXXXXX ... XXXXXXXXXX ) of the activation link and pasted it in the activation code area. The XXXX'S in after the "unit_id=" represent the actual activation code. They are not actual X's. They will be numbers and letter. I then followed the instruction.

After the OPI name screen, it attempted to transfer me to https://opi/admin which gave me an Unable to connect page? I simply clicked the "Try Again" button and it took me to a page stating that "This Connection is Untrusted" (I imagine this is due to the ssl certificate). By the way, I'm using a Firefox browser to do this setup. I proceeded to click the "I Understand the Risks" link toward the bottom. Then clicked "Add Exception...". A small popup page appears. On the bottom left side, I clicked "Confirm Security Exception". I did not click on the "Permanently store this exception" due to this being the first time I allowed the exception. I always attempt the first time in a temporary state ... just in case. :)

Funny thing happened after clicking the "Confirm Security Exception". The middle statement of this small page now says "This site provides valid, verified identification. There is no need to add a exception". ? So I clicked Cancel

I then clicked refresh and the page stating that "This Connection is Untrusted" came up again? I'm now in a loop because it will not allow me to add the exception!?

I open up another browser (Chromium) and put the same url (https://opi/admin) into the address bar and clicked enter. I got a similar security warning. I clicked the "Proceed Anyway" and the browser put a red line through the https in the url. I imagine it is now not using ssl due to the certificate.

I proceed with this insecure page to login (which worked).

So instead of just leaving this post I went opi forum searching and found this page http://community.openproducts.com/forum ... t-trusted/

PA in #417 said to do what I did above for Firefox which did not work. So, I clicked the download root CA link in his post and a small dialog box came up. I clicked all three and pressed enter. I then attempted to refresh the https://opi/admin page (still in the Firefox browser). I get a "Secure Connection Failed" page?

O.k. I shouldn't have done that. To delete the certificate I followed the instruction on this page http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/firefox-adding-trusted-ca/ (except instead of import ... I deleted).

Also, I imported the certificate into the Chromium browser and it also would not allow the secure connection :(

Please advise on how to proceed as I'm stuck.

For me the problem with finding the unit id was that the email I got from the webshop@openproducts.com had two parts. The text only and html versions. The text only version DID NOT have the uint id anywhere. It had link to the order (and info@openproducts.com email), but no other links.

The HTML version had the more detailed information, including my shipping address and the serial key for the product. The serial key displayed the unit id, and it was also link to the setup.op-i.me.

So when I first read the email, I only checked the text/plain version, and that didn't include the unit id. When I then searched through my archives for the unit id, I found the text/html version of the email too...

This might explain why some users have difficulty to find the unit id...

Hi trstone,

Just a short first comment on this to get you going again, the red line through the "https" in Chrome does not mean that the page is not secure, it means that there is no payment made to the large vendors that issue trusted certificates. You can read more on my opinion on this in the post you mentioned, http://community.openproducts.com/forum ... t-trusted/.

If you click on the padlock next to the "https" text in chrome, you can view the information about the certificate and indeed see that it is encrypted.

This is technical thread, I understand, but let me deviate a bit and say 'thank you' to Tor. I am glad to see that you care about the baby you brought to life. I am OK to live with beta devices/software as long as I feel that there is some real owner with sense of purpose and direction.
Yes, I was frustrated by limited (read: non existing) documentation. By relatively quiet user forum. By unusual activation process (which purpose was not explained at any stage). So the missing 'unit ID' was frustrating even more. But the story looks completely different when you know that the vendor cares... Let me repeat: thank you.
If your business model assumes any user contributions, I can volunteer for some form of documentation development. Be it user manual(s)*. Be it technical paper(s). Be it technical/product wiki. I think that end users (including myself :-) ) have deserved to know what is inside OPI and how this stuff works together.

*) - yes, I know the OPI Quickstart PDF document. It is good. But it can be even better - adopted security mechanisms (incl. SSL, TLS), DHCP, Roundcube, firmware ver.1.0 limits, S3QL, backups... Wow, plenty of topics to address and explain.

Hi trstone,

Regarding your certificate problems. (This is a jar of worms of big proportions.)

But let me start by stating. OPI will never and is not even capable of communicating on anything else than an encrypted browser connection. The only thing we do if you try to access OPI on a normal unencrypted connection is to redirect you to the encrypted start page.

Then lets talk about the loop you experienced in Firefox. This is most likely due to cache-problems in Firefox. Been there done that Try empty all caches and reload the page :( (We have some work to do here since we do have some problems with pages being cached hard by some browsers)

Regarding importing our CA, which is highly recommended, this is something that we have to verify and document better. If possible we will try to ease this process. (Fx. if you use "our" Android applications, they only trust our CA and no one else which would actually be safer than if we went out and got ourself a signed certificate.)

So any input in how that failed would be interesting.
